Documenting your breakdown protects you in multiple potential disputes — insurance claims, warranty arguments with the tow operator, rideshare platform downtime disputes, and disputes about pre-existing damage.
Photos to take: all four sides of the vehicle (showing condition before tow), close-ups of any existing damage, the breakdown location (street sign, landmarks, mile marker), the dashboard if relevant (mileage, fuel level, warning lights).
Notes to record: time of breakdown, weather conditions, what you were doing when it happened, any warning signs leading up to it.
After service: photo the invoice, save the receipt email, screenshot any text messages with the dispatcher or technician.
For insurance claims, having time-stamped photos is much more credible than verbal descriptions. The phone's metadata records the time and GPS location automatically.
