Locked Out of Your House: The Same Wedge-and-Rod Approach Works

Most pin-tumbler residential locks can be picked without damaging the door, frame, or hardware.

Residential lockouts use similar principles to car lockouts. Most pin-tumbler, deadbolt, and lever locks can be picked without damaging the door, frame, or hardware.

High-security locks (Medeco, ASSA, Mul-T-Lock) often require drill-and-replace because they're specifically designed to resist picking. We'll quote that before doing anything destructive.

ID confirming you live at or have legal access to the address is required before we open any residential door. Utility bill matching the address, driver's license matching, or landlord on the phone is sufficient.

If you have a smart lock with a code or app, we can sometimes help you reset it without entering the property. Otherwise, the physical override is the same wedge-and-rod technique.

For renters: keep your landlord's phone number accessible. They may be able to come unlock the door faster than a service call, depending on the property.

Quick Tips

  • Bring ID matching the address before service
  • Hide a spare key with a trusted neighbor, not under the doormat
  • Smart locks can sometimes be reset remotely
  • High-security locks may require drill-and-replace — get a quote
  • Renters: keep landlord contact info handy
