When you know a tow truck is coming, a few minutes of prep make the hookup faster and the process less stressful. The driver appreciates it and your vehicle gets out safer.
Put the vehicle in neutral if possible. For automatic transmissions, this requires the key in 'on' position. For manual transmissions, put it in neutral with the parking brake off. This lets the tow operator move the vehicle without resistance.
Remove valuables from the vehicle that you don't want left at a shop or impound lot. The tow process is usually safe, but if your vehicle is going to be stored somewhere, anything valuable should come with you.
Document the vehicle's condition with photos — all four sides, interior dash, any existing damage. This protects you if minor scratches happen during the tow process.
Confirm the destination with the tow operator. Where exactly is the shop? Is it open right now? Does the shop know to expect your vehicle? Avoid surprise drop-offs at closed shops where the vehicle sits over a weekend.
Keep your keys and documents accessible. The driver may need the registration and your driver's license documented for the tow paperwork.
