Hybrid vehicles (Prius, Camry Hybrid, Insight, etc.) have two batteries. The high-voltage traction battery (200–600V) powers the electric motor. The 12V auxiliary battery runs the standard accessories — lights, infotainment, ECU.
When a hybrid won't start, it's almost always the 12V that's dead. The high-voltage system is healthy. A standard 12V jump-start fixes the problem in 5–10 minutes.
Don't try to jump the high-voltage system — it's dangerous and unnecessary. The 12V auxiliary battery is typically located in the trunk or under the rear seat, with clearly marked jump points.
Hybrid 12V batteries fail at the same rate as conventional batteries — 3–5 years typically. Many hybrid owners are confused when their 'hybrid' fails because they don't realize they have a normal 12V battery just like any car.
Replacement is straightforward — standard 12V battery, just installed in a non-engine-bay location. Pricing similar to conventional vehicles.
